Portal Demolition/Widening North Yard

Metro’s plan for better rail service on the Metro B (Red) and D (Purple) Lines evolves as workers widen the portals in the Division 20 rail yard that bring trains to and from Union Station.

Other work adds more capacity for trains in that yard. The benefit from these projects, which began in 2020, will be faster turnaround for cleaning and repairing the subway cars, meaning more frequent service for riders.

Through 2024 workers will widen the eastern half of the portal and remove the existing easterly side of the portal structure and rail. Then the new east half of the structure will be built and new tracks installed. This work will not affect public right-of-way.

There will be intermittent and moderate noise due to the operation of heavy equipment and other activities. Notification of work during nighttime hours will be provided.
