Gavin Canyon Undercrossing Bridge Construction 

Summary 

As part of the I-5 North County Enhancements Project, Metro’s contractor OHLA-USA, will be widening the existing Gavin Canyon Bridge to accommodate the new high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. This bridge crosses over The Old Road, located between Calgrove Bl and Weldon Canyon Rd.  

Construction will take place along the outside shoulders, center median, and along The Old Road. Activities will include excavation, shoring, auger drilling for concrete foundations, form, rebar, and concrete work, soil backfill, falsework installation and removal, and bridge barrier work. Prepare for intermittent nighttime closures on The Old Rd to complete construction.

This bridge extension is anticipated to be substantially completed by December 2024.  

Upcoming Activities in 2023

Bridge foundation work involving use of cranes and drill rigs, steel and concrete work, rebar work and concrete placement for new bridge structures, utility work, restriping of The Old Rd.

What to Expect & Traffic Control  

  • Day work behind k-rail at the center median and shoulders for the bridge columns.  
  • Night work utilizing lane closures between 8pm and 6am.  
  • Access and intermittent traffic control during off-peak hours for construction access from The Old Road. 
  • Nighttime closures and detours on The Old Road at Gavin Canyon, 9pm to 5am on weeknights, and 9pm to 7am on weekends if needed.

Essential Details 

  • Work hours: Monday through Friday and Saturdays as needed, between 7am to 4pm and 7pm to 6am. Crews will begin to mobilize at 6am.  
  • All lanes will reopen before peak traffic hours each morning.  
  • No lane closures will be implemented during morning or evening peak traffic hours. 
  • Speed limit within the construction zone on I-5 is 55-miles per hour.

Access to emergency responders will be maintained. Construction is a dynamic process, it is subject to weather conditions, and information is subject to change, visit the project website for the most up to date information and a weekly listing of ramp closures scheduled.
